Artificial Christmas Garland: Lengths, Lights and How to Hang It
Share
You bought a garland last year and laid it along the mantel. It stopped two feet short of where you pictured it ending. Or it reached, but sat there flat and skinny, nothing like the photo on the box.
Neither is a garland problem. They are measuring and shaping problems, and both are easy to fix before you buy.
Three things decide whether a garland looks right: its length for the spot you have in mind, the lights it carries, and how you shape and hang it. Every spec below comes from Puleo's current listings so that you can compare numbers rather than adjectives.
How Much Garland Do You Need?
Measure the route, not the surface. The length you need is the path the garland follows, including every dip and drop, and that path is almost always longer than the shelf or rail underneath.
The easiest way to find it is a piece of string. Lay it along the spot exactly the way you want the garland to sit, with the same sag and the same drop at the ends. Mark where it stops, then measure the string. That beats any formula, because it is built from your room and your taste.
Garland comes in fixed lengths, so round up. Puleo's current range runs 6, 9, 10, and 20 feet, mostly 9 to 10 inches wide.
A Mantel
The mantel width is your starting number for a straight run along the front edge. Most people want more, because a garland that runs the shelf and then falls each side reads as finished.
As a guideline, many decorators allow about one to two feet of drop at each end. A 5-foot mantel with a 2-foot drop on each side needs 9 feet, exactly one 9-foot garland. If you want loose swags across the front, run the string test, because every dip adds length.
A Staircase
Measure along the handrail from the newel post to the top, with the tape following the rail rather than the floor. A rail is longer than it looks from below, and people most often guess this number.
That covers a garland laid straight along the rail. Swags between balusters or a spiral around the rail take noticeably more, depending on how deep or tight you go, so run the string in that shape. On a long staircase, a 20-foot length earns its keep, because one continuous piece avoids a join halfway up.
A Front Door
Add up the path: up one side, across the top, down the other. For example, a frame measuring 7 feet on each side and 3.5 feet across is a 17.5-foot run. One 20-foot garland covers it, or two 9-foot lengths meeting at the top center, where a bow can hide the join.
Garland Lengths and Fullness, from the Current Range
Length is half the picture. The other half is how full the garland looks once it is up, and tip count is the most useful number a listing gives you for that. All of these showed as available on October 14, 2026.
| Garland | Size | Branch tips | Finish |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 ft Spruce Garland | 20 ft x 10 in | 380 PVC | Green |
| 20 ft Flocked Garland | 20 ft x 10 in | 380 PVC | Flocked |
| Deluxe Pine Garland | 10 ft | 184 | Green |
| 9 ft Decorated Garland | 9 ft x 10 in | 220 PE/PVC | Pine cones, berries |
| Round Valley Pine Garland | 9 ft x 10 in | 220 PVC | Green |
| Flocked Berkshire Spruce Garland | 9 ft x 10 in | 170 PVC | Flocked, pine cones |
Compare Tips Per Foot, Not Total Tips
The 20-foot spruce wins on total count. Per foot, the 9-foot Round Valley is fuller. Divide tips by length for a fair comparison between listings, though tip size and accents like pine cones also affect how full a garland looks.
PE, PVC or Both
PVC tips are the bushy filler that gives a garland body. PE tips are molded and read as more lifelike up close. A PE/PVC mix, like the 9-foot decorated garland, gives you volume and close-up detail in one piece.
Pre-Lit or Unlit Garland?
Buy pre-lit if you want it finished the moment it is hung. Buy unlit if you already own lights you love, or want to choose the color and spacing yourself.
Pre-lit saves the season's fiddliest job: wrapping a string of lights evenly through a long, floppy run of branches.
Unlit gives you control over light color, bulb size and density, or no lights at all. Several unlit listings, such as the 9-foot White Round Valley Pine garland, make that point directly: use it as it is, or dress it with lights, ornaments, and ribbon. If you light your tree the same way, our guide to unlit artificial Christmas trees covers it. The main trade-off is between pre-lit and unlit Christmas trees.
Lights on Pre-Lit Garland: What the Listings Say
Puleo's pre-lit holiday garland comes in two types: clear incandescent and warm white LED on batteries. Here is the range, using only what each listing states.
| Garland | Size | Tips | Lights | Power, as listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-Lit Balsam Fir Garland | 9 ft x 10 in | 420 PE/PVC | 100 clear incandescent | Not listed as battery |
| Pre-Lit Decorated Christmas Garland | 108 x 10 in | Not stated | 100 clear incandescent | Not listed as battery |
| Silverton Pine Garland | 9 ft | 200 PVC | 100 clear incandescent | Not listed as battery |
| Pre-Lit Garland with Timer | 9 ft x 10 in | 160 PVC | 50 warm white LED | 3 AA, timer |
| Pre-lit Flocked Garland | 9 ft x 10 in | 76 | 40 warm white LED | Battery |
| 6 ft Pre-Lit Garland | 6 ft x 9 in | 146 PE/PVC | 50 warm white LED | 3 AA |
| 6 ft Decorated Garland, three styles | 6 ft x 10 in | Decorated | 120 warm white LED | 3 D, 8/16 hour timer |
Clear Incandescent
All three carry 100 clear bulbs, the classic look that matches a clear-lit tree. The Decorated Christmas Garland also includes fuses and extra bulbs, so routine upkeep is covered from day one.
Warm White LED on Batteries
Every LED garland in the range is battery-operated, and several have a timer. The 6-foot decorated garlands list an 8-hour on, 16-hour off cycle, so they turn on by themselves each evening. Running on a battery pack also means placement isn't tied to your outlets, which suits a front door or a mantel with no socket nearby. Check the battery size, AA or D, and note that the listings that mention it say batteries are not included.
For incandescent sets, check the product page and the included instructions to see how each one is powered and where it can be used. If you are unsure about anything electrical, follow those instructions and ask a qualified electrician.
Matching Garland to Your Wreath and Tree
Match the greenery and the light color first. Matching accents is optional. The easiest route is pieces made as a set, and Puleo builds several.
The Balsam Fir Set
The Pre-Lit Balsam Fir Garland shares its name and clear incandescent lights with the 24" Pre-Lit Balsam Fir Wreath. It also matches the Balsam Fir pre-lit tree, sold in clear incandescent from 4.5 to 12 feet. Garland on the mantel, wreath above it, tree in the corner, same green and same light.
Manchester, Canterbury and Durham
Each collection pairs a 6-foot battery-operated garland with a 26-inch wreath and a 28-inch swag. Manchester is red berries, pine cones, magnolia, and holly. Canterbury is champagne and silver balls with gold leaves. Durham is flocked, with red and silver balls. The Manchester wreath and Manchester swag both use warm white LEDs, so all three pieces glow the same color. Each is sold individually.
Unlit Pairs
The Round Valley Pine garland pairs with a matching 24" Round Valley Pine Wreath, and the Berkshire Spruce garland pairs with a 24" Flocked Berkshire Spruce Wreath.
Tree from somewhere else? Pick a garland with a similar needle style, then match the light color: clear with clear, warm white with warm white. Across a room, the eye reads light color before needle shape. For the door itself, our guide to pre-lit outdoor Christmas wreaths covers how to choose a wreath and what to check before taking a display outside.
How to Hang Garland on a Mantel, Banister and Door Frame
Shape it before you hang it. Garland arrives compressed, and ten minutes of fluffing is the difference between thin and full.
Work along the whole length, pulling each tip away from the center wire in different directions until you cannot see through it. On a pre-lit garland, settle the bulbs among the tips rather than on top. Then follow the hanging and placement instructions supplied with your garland.
On a Mantel
Decide whether it lies flat along the edge or swags in loose dips. Center it, then let the ends fall evenly. Uneven drops are what people notice. Hang the garland before adding candles or frames, and check the instructions for guidance on placement near a working fireplace.
On a Banister
Start at the newel post and work up. The bottom of the stairs is where people look, so finish that end with a bow or a cluster of pine cones. A garland along the top of the rail is the cleanest look. Swags between balusters are fuller but need more length.
Around a Door Frame
Hang the top first, centered and level, then bring the sides down to the same height. If two lengths meet at the top, cover the join with a bow or a matching swag, as in the Manchester photo, with a battery garland; plan where the battery box will sit so you can reach the switch and change batteries without taking it down.
Outdoors
Several Puleo garlands are described as suitable for indoor or covered outdoor display. Read the listing and product instructions first, and choose products rated and instructed for outdoor use.
Which Garland is Right for You?
A Mantel and a Clear-Lit Tree
The Pre-Lit Balsam Fir Garland. At 420 tips, it is the fullest 9-foot garland in the range, and it matches the Balsam Fir wreath and tree.
A Front Door or a Spot with No Socket
A 6-foot battery-operated decorated garland for Manchester, Canterbury, or Durham, with a matching wreath and swag. The timer handles the evenings.
A Long Staircase or a Wide Door Frame
A 20-foot length. The 20 ft Spruce Garland for green, the 20 ft Flocked Garland for snow.
You Like to Style It Yourself
An unlit 9- or 10-foot garland, such as the Round Valley Pine or the Deluxe Pine, as a base for your own lights and ribbon.
Why Buy Garland from the People Who Make the Tree
Garland looks best when it belongs in the room, and the simplest way to do that is to choose a manufacturer that designs garland, wreaths, and trees together. Puleo builds the Balsam Fir line across all three, and the Manchester, Canterbury, and Durham collections as matched sets, so greens and lights line up without guesswork.
Buying direct also means the people who built the product provide the specs: tip counts, light counts, battery size, and timer settings are on the listing, and the Balsam Fir garland listing states a one-year warranty. The spare fuses and bulbs in the Decorated Christmas Garland box reflect that same thinking. A garland you can look after is one you can hang again next year.

FAQs: Artificial Christmas Garland
How Long Should Garland Be for a Mantel?
Start with the mantel width, then add the drop you want at each end. As a guideline, many decorators allow around one to two feet per side, so a 5-foot mantel with 2-foot drops needs about 9 feet. For an exact figure, lay a string along the mantel in the shape you want, including any dips, measure it, and round up to the nearest garland length.
How Much Garland Do I Need for a Staircase?
Measure along the handrail from the newel post to the top, not along the floor. That length covers a garland laid straight along the rail. Swags between balusters or a spiral wrap take more, depending on how deep or tight you make them, so lay a string in that shape and measure it. On a long staircase, one 20-foot garland avoids a visible join.
How Much Garland Do I Need for a Front Door?
Add both sides of the frame and the top. A 7-foot-tall frame with 3.5 feet across is a 17.5-foot run, which one 20-foot garland covers, or two 9-foot garlands meeting under a bow. Measure your own door, including trim and sidelights, because frames vary more than most people expect.
Is Battery-Operated Garland Worth It?
For spots without a nearby outlet, yes. Puleo's battery-operated garlands use warm white LED lights, and several include a timer, such as the 8-hour on/16-hour off cycle on the 6-foot decorated garlands. That lets you hang them on a door or a mantel anywhere. Check the battery size on the listing, AA or D, and buy batteries with the garland.
Can Artificial Garland Be Used Outdoors?
Some can. Several Puleo garlands are described as suitable for indoor or covered outdoor display, and a few listings say indoor or outdoor. Read the wording on the specific listing and the instructions supplied with the product before hanging it outside, and use products rated and instructed for outdoor use.
How Do I Make Artificial Garland Look Fuller?
Fluff it properly before hanging. Work along the full length, pulling every tip out from the center wire in different directions until you cannot see through it. When you shop, divide tip count by length to compare fullness between listings. Layering helps too: ribbon, pine cones, or a second garland twisted through the first.
